After repeatedly failing to find an iPad 2 on the local Apple store I went the online way. Went to the Apple site and ordered an iPad online. The online reservation has the small perk of personalizing the device by adding an engraving on the back. Nice feature but not a big one.
Order fulfillment time is currently a 2-3 weeks wait. My device will arrive in closer to three weeks time. As a consumer this is annoying. I feel that Apple could have organized itself better for this one because the demand was not a surprise at all. As soon as the rumors about the upcoming iPad 2 started to show up, we all saw the signs of yet another huge hit. The amount of fake pictures, the amount of conversations of what the device will have and how it will look like was there from the very first moment. If I saw it, I am sure the Apple executives saw it as well. If the demand is so clear then one can expect the vendor to use the time to prepare the supply chain to support it…Well , I really do not know why, maybe it was intentionality to create a better sense of smashing hit (as if they need one), maybe it was just disrespect to the consumers (we rush to buy it anyway and we are willing to stand in line since 5am as long as we get the device). In any case, Apple did not prepare their channels to support this level of demand. It did not help that some of the more established distributors decided to add games of their own. I am talking about what allegedly Best Buy was doing with the supply that they did have and that was not openly distributed (Best Buy Extorts Would-Be iPad 2 owners). Overall not a pleasant experience to the consumers (to us!).
